PHIT4DC Informatics Intern Position Summary:

 

Please note, participation in this internship opportunity requires enrollment and successful completion of the PHIT4DC 15-week informatics course offered every semester at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) and Howard University.

Our membership includes nine Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) in the District of Columbia and Maryland, operating nearly 60 primary care delivery sites that serve over 200,000 residents.


DCPCA’s Health Information Technology (HIT) team is responsible for planning, implementing, and managing technology initiatives that support the healthcare operations of our community health center members. These initiatives include implementing health data exchange strategies, facilitating population health data acquisition, analysis, and reporting, and providing clinical data reporting services to support health centers’ Quality Improvement objectives.

In this role, we are seeking a student passionate about health information technology and informatics with a strong interest in data analytics in the primary care setting. The ideal candidate brings educational and/or professional experience in health informatics, computer science, public health, or a related field. The Intern will support the HIT team by performing a variety of technical and administrative duties, assisting with data reporting and visualization, database design, analytics, and other responsibilities as needed.

 

Examples of projects students can undertake during the internship:

  • Designing and creating data visualizations using platforms such as Microsoft PowerBI or Tableau.
  • Managing relational database design and schema creation to support health center operations.
  • Analyzing datasets using SQL and other statistical tools to identify trends and insights. 
  • Developing and implementing strategies to improve data extraction, quality, and efficiency. 
  • Supporting DCPCA’s HIT team with reporting on performance indicators and data-driven decision-making processes.

  

QUALIFICATIONS and EDUCATION:

 

Required qualifications and experience:

  • Currently enrolled master's or post-bachelor’s degree candidate in a program related to public health, health informatics, information systems, computer science, or a relevant field.
  • Proficiency in SQL programming and data visualization tools (e.g., PowerBI, Tableau). 
  • Experience with statistical packages for data analysis (e.g., Microsoft Excel).
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and accuracy in interpreting and presenting data.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment with a high volume of tasks.
  • Proficiency in MS Office products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook

COMPENSATION:

The intern is expected to complete 20 hours per week; not to exceed more than 400 hours total. The hourly range for this position is between $22 and $25 dollars. Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits

 

ADA SPECIFICATIONS:

This position will be based in an office in Washington D.C. and will allow for telework options. This position is primarily sedentary and may require some bending and lifting.
